Breaking News – ‘The Toadlickers‘ music video that I directed and produced for Thomas Dolby last year has just been nominated for not one, but two Webby Awards!

The Webby’s are The Oscars of the web, so this is quite a big deal!

The Toadlickers is one of five music videos nominated in the ONLINE FILM & VIDEO > MUSIC category of The Webby People’s Voice Award.

HDDSLR: Moving From Still to Video with Vincent Laforet

Last weekend HDSLR guru, Vincent Laforet, held a weekend long workshop in Seattle, that was hosted (and streamed live on the net) by Creative Live. Since it was Laforet’s short film, ‘Reverie‘ that opened my eyes (and those of several million others) to the possibilities of the Canon 5DmkII, I was fascinated to watch as he took a small group of aspiring filmmakers on a journey through the shooting, editing and completion of a short documentary and onto scripted drama with professional actors, using HDSLRs.  Continue reading “HDDSLR: Moving From Still to Video with Vincent Laforet”

The Making of Thomas Dolby’s The Toadlickers – Part 2

With our first shoot complete, the next step was to get the relevant footage to (evil) puppet master Mike Quinn, in The States. Mike is one of the best in the biz, having worked on everything from The Muppets to the Star Wars series (in which he played Nien Nunb) and thanks to his enthusiasm, passion and commitment, what had started off life as an idea for a horse singing ‘do-si-do’, had quickly snowballed into a mini puppet epic. The Making of Thomas Dolby’s The Toadlickers – Part 1

If one was asked to sum up Thomas Dolby’s musical career in three words, ‘expect the unexpected’ might be good ones. Though perhaps best known as one of the early pioneers of Electronica, he’s worked across a multitude of genres, with a long list of big names, both as artist and producer, so I guess that when he sent me the rough mix of ‘The Toadlickers’, to see if I’d be interested in directing the music video, I shouldn’t have been surprised by its ‘brand new mash of Bluegrass and Techno’…but I was (very pleasantly I might add) and leapt, as it were, at the opportunity.
